Q&A. 01 - Class Rules and Battens

Q. Can I replace a broken batten from my sail with a batten from another sail?

A. Yes, but you must make sure the replacement batten  is "of the same type and function as the original" - eg a fibre glass rod batten is replaced by a fibreglass rod batten of the same length.  Battens are a sail fitting and the replacement batten shall not change "the essential shape, characteristics or function" of the sail - eg the taper, and therefore the shape of the batten under tension in the batten pocket, shall remain the same.

Q. Can I use carbon battens in my sail?

A. NO, sails on the Approved List do not come supplied with carbon battens; and cannot be modified or repaired by using carbon battens.

Q. Can I add extra stiffening to a batten by adding an extra length of battening into the batten pocket?

A. No, this is not permitted as the rules are "closed" class rules.
